Plumbing Emergency? What to Do Before the Plumber Arrives

· By

If you have a plumbing emergency, shut off your water at the main valve first, then call a licensed plumber. Acting fast in the first few minutes can prevent thousands of dollars in water damage. Here’s exactly what to do before help arrives.

1. Shut Off the Water

For most emergencies, turn off your home’s main water shut-off valve — usually located near where the water line enters your home, at the water meter, or in the garage. For a single fixture (like a toilet or sink), you can use the smaller shut-off valve directly beneath or behind it.

2. Turn Off the Water Heater (If Relevant)

If the emergency involves your water heater or hot water lines, turn off the water heater after shutting the water main. For an electric unit, switch off its breaker; for gas, set it to “pilot.” This prevents the heating element from running dry and being damaged.

3. Contain the Damage

Move furniture and valuables away from the water, soak up standing water with towels, and place a bucket under active drips. If water is near electrical outlets or your panel, stay clear and shut off electricity to that area if you can do so safely.

4. Call a Licensed Plumber

Call a licensed plumber and describe what’s happening — we can often guide you on the phone while we’re on the way. In Florida, plumbing work must be performed by a state-certified or registered contractor under Florida Statute Chapter 489, so make sure whoever you call is properly licensed.

Common Plumbing Emergencies in Florida

  • Burst pipes — including aging polybutylene pipe common in homes built 1978–1995.
  • Sewage backups — a health hazard that needs fast professional clearing.
  • Water heater failure — leaking tanks or no hot water, accelerated by Florida’s hard water.
  • Slab leaks — hidden leaks under the foundation that drive up water bills.
